JOSEPH TRUMPELDOR SPERLING
Joseph Trumpeldor Sperling, 93, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 7, 2013.
He was born May 21, 1920 in Palestine, and immigrated to the United States in 1938. He served in the US Army as a paratrooper and received an honorable discharge. Joe originally spent time with his family in Sioux City, Iowa before settling in Los Angeles. He worked as a gardener and landscaper for many years, before opening his own business at the age of 53.
Joe was founder and owner of Sperling Nursery in Calabasas. Opened in 1973, Sperling Nursery grew from a small sod outpost to a large nursery that was beloved by many. It was Joe's strong work ethic and perseverance that made the nursery such a success and his dedication to his customers and employees that made Joe a local celebrity. He was a born storyteller and loved to chat with anyone who would listen. Joe worked 7 days a week until he was 93 years old. He was the definition of the American dream, proof that successes can be achieved by anyone who works hard enough. A born optimist, Joe always said "Where there's life, there's hope."
Joe is survived by his daughter, Maureen Goldberg; son, Michael (Debbie) Sperling; son, David (Dao) Sperling; daughter, Melissa (George) Kroger; brother, Ben Ami Sperling; sister, Alisa (Ernie) Kretzmer; and many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Aviva; his step-daughter, Jeannie; and his wife of 51 years, Muriel Dorothy Sperling (Degnan) in 2003.
A memorial celebrating Joe's life was held at Sperling Nursery on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Joe will be laid to rest at Pierce Brothers Cemetery in Westlake Village, California. You will never be forgotten, Joe!
