Vercouteren, Evelyn (1917 - 2013)
Evelyn Vercouteren, 95, a resident of Sun City, Arizona died peacefully Thursday afternoon, January 24, 2013, at the Banner Boswell Hospital in Sun City surrounded by her daughter, Beth, her pastors and close friends.
Born June 18, 1917 in Oostburg, WI, Evelyn was the youngest child of John & Minnie (Lemmenes) Vander Jagt. She was a graduate of Oostburg High School, Class of 1934.
Evelyn married Jerome Kreunen on February 17, 1937. They resided in Cedar Grove and Birnamwood, WI. Jerome was killed in action on November 28, 1944, while serving in WWII.
On September 21, 1948 she married James "Jim" P. Vercouteren. With Jim's retirement they moved to Sun City, Arizona and shared 15 active years together; wintering in Sun City and summering in Sheboygan. Jim preceded her in death on August 20, 1991.
After Jim's death, Evelyn continued her annual travels from her home in Sun City for 22 more years. Ev loved the Arizona sunshine, the warmth of her Arizona Room, the fresh fruit from her citrus trees and vegetables from her garden. Arizona was her home. The last 6 years were accompanied by her care giver/daughter, Beth.
Over the years she held several retail part time positions in the community, including People's and Steinberg Baum. As a homemaker, Evelyn enjoyed many opportunities for volunteer work in both Sheboygan and Sun City. From her time in Girl Scouting to the hours donated to the Sun City Lodge Care Facility until age 89, Ev found many ways to be involved, feeling the joy and importance of giving back.
Evelyn was a sharp, avid bridge player, always ready to play "a good game of bridge." She belonged to several bridge clubs, outliving most of her bridge partners. Ev loved baseball, basketball and, of course, the Green Bay Packers. In her later years, with failing eye sight and being crippled with arthritis, she enjoyed listening to Bob Uecker announce Brewer baseball games. In Arizona, Ev enjoyed listening to her other favorite sports team, The Phoenix Suns.
At 95 years old, Evelyn was a frail but determined woman. Her strength came from her faith in God and family. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Evelyn was a member of Zion Church in Sheboygan for 65 years. She was also an associate member of the United Church of Sun City in Arizona.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters: Beth Vercouteren of Appleton, WI; Kay (Jon) Malson of Sheboygan Falls, WI and their sons Adam Malson of Chicago, IL, Tyler (Alynna) Malson of Houston, TX, and David Max Malson of Milwaukee, WI; step-son James H. (Karen) Vercouteren of Cleveland, WI and their children Ellen Hubbard of Aurora, IL, Tim (Deborah) Vercouteren of Springfield, VA, and Brett (Julie) Vercouteren of Elgin, IL. Evelyn had 9 great-grandchildren; Jean (Barry) Garner-Steel of York, UK, Danielle (Brian) Chaplin of Aurora, IL, Matthew Hubbard also of Aurora, IL, James J. and Ian Vercouteren both of Springfield, VA, and Emma, Joshua, Rebecca and Katherine Vercouteren of Elgin, IL, and 5 great-great-grand children (4 in UK); and nieces and nephews. Jean Vander Jagt of Cedar Grove, WI, Evelyn's sister-in-law, survives as the remaining member of their generation.
In addition to her parents and both husbands, Evelyn is preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome and Marvin Vander Jagt and her sister, Irene Moore.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Zion Evangelical Covenant Church, 1125 N. 6th Street, Sheboygan, WI 53081. Pastor Andy Hopp will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Dear Beth, Kay, Jon and families: We send our sympathy from Chandler, AZ, after reading the announcement of your Mom's passing. We can remember greeting her in church and hearing she was about to leave for AZ, and that is how we will fondly remember her. You always made sure she was at Zion's services and we enjoyed sharing a Hello with her! Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Gail and Marvin Rohde

God be with you as you experience this loss of your mother. It is so difficult to lose a parent... that piece of your history no longer tangible. My dad's passing has given me greater joy in my longing for heaven, where there will be another Vercouteren Family Reunion with beautiful harmonies to share. Blessings, Jane(Carl Otte)Frey
