Dorothy L. (Escher) Ruh, age 83, of New Holstein, passed away peacefully Wednesday July 16, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.

Dorothy fought a courageous battle with cancer for 13 years. She would always rally, but finally lost her battle, succumbing to congestive heart failure.

The former Dorothy Escher was born November 26, 1930, in New Holstein, the third of twelve children born to the late Clarence & Helen (Baer) Escher.

She attended grade school and high school in New Holstein graduating in 1948.

Dorothy worked hard all her life; first on the family farm and at 16 she got a job at the ticket booth at the New Holstein Theater. In addition to the Theater, Dorothy worked babysitting for Hester Rogge and working at her home based dress shop. She also worked at the Federated Store, Flex-i-Clogs, and Tecumseh Engine Products for 27 years. She retired in 1996.

One day Eugene Ruh walked by the theater. Dorothy caught his eye and they began chatting and soon dating. Eugene and Dorothy were married June 27, 1953 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein.

Dorothy was a passionate gardener all her life having learned to garden from Hester Rogge.

Her mother once said "Whenever Dorothy has an extra quarter, she buys herself a plant". Dorothy was also the family photographer from a young age; famous for always remembering everyone's birthday with a card and photos. Dorothy also loved to read; surrounding herself with reading materials of all varieties.

After retiring, she volunteered for many years at the Salvatorian Mission and read to elementary school children in Mount Calvary. She also enjoyed organizing family reunions and spending time with family and friends. Her grandson, Owen, was the light of her life.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene; daughters, Christine and Anne Ruh; and her son, Charles (Elizabeth) Ruh; her grandson, Owen; two brothers, Fred (Dorothy) Escher and Ronnie Escher; her sister, Shirley (Dan) Lecher; her sister-in-law, Linda Escher; her brothers-in-law, Kenneth Schnell, Earl Morgen, and Charles Wolfgram; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Clarence & Helen Escher; six sisters, Alice Derrick, Marion Schabach, Virginia Schnell, Helen Morgen, Jean Wolfgram, and Betty Escher; two brothers, Roger Escher and Allen Escher; brothers-in-law, Keyes Derrick, Lester Schabach; sister-in-law, Jean Escher; four nephews, Michael Derrick, Brian Schnell, Gary Escher, and Dale Escher.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church 1724 Madison Street New Holstein, WI 53061. Rev. Harold Berryman will officiate with Deacon Pat Knier assisting. Burial will be in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in New Holstein.

Family and friends may call at the church on Tuesday, July 22nd from 3:00 PM until 5:30 PM.

Dorthy's favorite saying, "Some people make of life a garden, and walk only in its paths".
