Jean S. Fisher
Mrs. Jean S. Fisher, age 96, passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
Jean was born July 18, 1916 in Wausau, the daughter of Erle and Jessie Friday Stoneman. After graduating from Platteville High School, Jean went on to attend the University of Wisconsin
- Madison and later earned her Master's Degree in Journalism from the University of Minnesota
. On June 5, 1941, she was united in marriage with Donald Fisher at the Church of the Holy Communion in Lake Geneva, WI. From 1936-1941, she taught French and English in Lake Geneva, and went on to become the Extension Editor at Penn State University
After living in five states and moving every three years, Jean and Don established a home in the town of Belgium in 1958, and lived there as the only winter residents at first, watching what had been pasture land disappear as houses were added to the area. During this time, Jean gardened, raised Newfoundland dogs and enjoyed her other interests - reading, cooking and traveling. An avid interest in gardening led Jean and Don to develop a number of specialty gardens at their Lake Michigan Shore home. They received gold awards from Wisconsin Landscape federation. In 1998, Channel 10 featured them in 3 televised episodes and numerous tour groups visited their gardens. Both Jean and Don were very active in the Herb Society of America at both the state and national level. In the late 1990's, they sponsored the building of a columbarium and garden at Grace Episcopal Church in Sheboygan.
Jean was a board member for St. John's Retirement Center and Home for 8 years, and a past President of the Port Washington Woman's Club.
Jean is survived by her children: Gerald (Marni) Fisher of Madison and Jill (the late Henry) Kunsmann of Port Washington, as well as her grandchildren: Hannelore (Dan) Bruhn, Heinzel (Kai-i) Kunsmann and Erik (Colleen) Kunsmann.
