John G. "Jack" Rief

John G. "Jack" Rief, 81, of Kiel (Cedar Lake) died peacefully Thursday January 24, 2013 at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center after a courageous battle with kidney disease.

Jack was born on April 1, 1931 in Francis Creek, WI, son of the late Clarence & Martha (Seidl) Rief. He was a member of the 1945 class at St. Andrews Catholic School and was a 1949 graduate of Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. Jack went on to graduate from Marquette School of Engineering in 1954.

On April 7, 1951 Jack was united in marriage to Marilyn Doubek at Holy Innocent Catholic Church in Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on July 23, 1992. Jack was married to Sharon Donovan on July 17, 1999 at St. George's Catholic Church in Elkhart Lake. Jack worked as a civil engineer following college. He was instrumental in designing and implementing the Ohio turnpike. He moved back to Wisconsin and was employed with Van Der Vaart of Sheboygan and served as the Executive Vice President of Wisconsin Concrete Products of Kiel for 50 years. He served two terms as the President of the WI Pipe Association and was recognized as an expert in his field.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in School Hill and was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus in Sheboygan. Jack enjoyed golf and shared many great friendships with those he golfed with. He was appointed Commisioner of the Town of Schleswig Sanitary district and for many years served as president. He was also a member of the Cedar Lake Improvement Association. He enjoyed his retirement years on Cedar Lake, especially taking pontoon rides and his winters in Sun Lakes, AZ. Jack enjoyed his time spent with family and friends and was loved by many.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Sharon Donovan-Rief of Cedar Lake. his children; Bill (Sue) Rief, Door County, Jerilyn Krueger, Kiel, Sue (Mike) Wusterbarth, Chandler AZ, his grandchildren; Stephanie (Randy) Sandum, Theresa Rief, Jacqueline (Peter) Morrison, Jessica (Shane) Bryant, Casey Krueger, Emily Wusterbarth. great grandchildren; Nathanial, Noah, Alicia, Boston & Dresden. Jack is further survived by his step-son; Kevin (Karie) Bencz, Peoria IL, step grandchildren; Geneva & Presley Bencz, his brother; Clark Rief, Des Moines IA, along with five sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law and their families.

Jack was preceded in death by his first wife Marilyn, two daughters; Karen & Theresa Rief, granddaughter; SSG Amy S. Krueger and a sister-in-law; Barbara Rief.

Funeral Mass for Jack will be held at 12:00 (noon) on Wednesday JANUARY 30, 2013 at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 212 Church St. St. Nazianz, with Rev. Patrick Nelson SDS officiating. Friends and family may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:30am until the time of services. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Sheboygan.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the SSG Amy S. Krueger Scholarship fund at Kiel High School and to St. Gregory's Grade School, St. Nazianz.

Jack's family would like to thank all the caregivers who helped Jack in any way especially, Morningside Health Care Center, Aurora Grafton Hospital, Dr. Michael Brooks, Dr. Kumar and the staff at Vince Lombardi Clinic. Your care and compassion was greatly appreciated.
