Summers, Rebecca D. (1915-2013)
Rebecca D. Summers, age 98, of Plymouth, Wisconsin, passed away on early Sunday morning (Sept. 8) at her home.
She was born on February 14, 1915 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Dr. Robert B. and Myrtle (Hendrik) Cofield.
She graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati in 1932. And then attended Hood College in Frederick, Maryland and graduated from the University of Wisconsin
in Madison with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Arts in 1936. After college she collaborated with her sister Carolyn in the design and production of custom made dresses and gowns.
Rebecca married Crosby H. Summers on June 19, 1937 in Cincinnati. The couple resided in Janesville, Wisconsin where she taught part-time in the Vocations School. After the death of her husband on December 17, 1969, she moved to Plymouth where she founded and operated Country Crafts Barn near Plymouth for 37 years, retiring in 2011.
She had a life-long interest in arts and crafts and was an accomplished dress designer, ceramic artist, and gardener. In recent year she became an avid reader as well as active volunteer at the Plymouth Arts Foundation, receiving it Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005.
Survivors include two sons: Professor William C. Summers (Wilma) of New Haven, Connecticut and James C. Summers (Debra) of Scottsdale, Arizona; three grandchildren, Edmund (Todd) R. Knauf III (Sabra) of Denver, Colorado, Susan K. Brennan (Donald) of Denver, Colorado and Emily A. Summers of Oakland, California, four great- grandchildren, Sophia and Trevor Knauf and Jackson & Grace Brennan, all of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her daughter: Rebecca Ann Knauf of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, two sisters, Mary Thompson Tiemeier and Carolyn Hedstrom and one brother, Dr. Robert H Cofield.
There will be a memorial gathering at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth on Saturday afternoon (October 12, 2013) from 1:00-2:00 PM. There will be a time to share memories and stories at the Suchon Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. and all friends and family are invited for food and fellowship at her residence on Shady Lane following the gathering. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Rebecca's name for the Plymouth Food Pantry.
