Klasen, George W.

George W. Klasen of 832 North 6th Street died Wednesday, February 27, 2013.

He recently began his 97th year on December 18th with a cheeseburger, fries, beer and cake party, but his good times soon ended due to an illness from which he was unable to recover. He was born in 1916 in Kaukauna to the late Herman Klasen and Anna Mary Krentz. He attended Holy Name School and graduated from Sheboygan High School in 1936.

He served in Europe during World War II from November 6, 1942, until February 15, 1946, as a member of the U.S. Army. On September 27, 1943, he married the love of his life, Helen F. Westermeyer, and they shared 67 happy years together until she passed away in March of 2010.

George was a businessman who owned and operated Kempf-Klasen Outdoor Advertising. He was active in the Sheboygan Community. He was a past president of the Sheboygan Rotary Club and held many offices in the Wisconsin Outdoor Advertising Association. He was also a life-long member of Holy Name Catholic Parish. He was passionate about education and believed it was to be a life-long endeavor. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to further their educations at every opportunity.

George and Helen spent their retirement years traveling, golfing, and spending time at the family cottage at Roberts Lake.

He will be missed by his three children - Dr. Christine Klasen Schmidt (Denny) of Pasadena, CA; Charles W. Klasen (Mary Kleefisch) of Appleton, WI; and James Klasen (Sheryl Dankwardt) of Green Bay, WI - and his five grandchildren - Thomas Klasen (Nathalie Bowman) of Brasschaat, Belgium; Anne Trezevant (Daniel) of Seabrook, SC; Martha Klasen Ranek (Justin) of Sturgeon Bay, WI; James Klasen (Amanda Maruhn) of Cambridge, MA; and Keryl Klasen of Wentzville, MO.

He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren - Amalia, Joseph, Daniel, Olivia, Timothy, Elizabeth, Daniel and Johnathan.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elmer, Oscar and William, and his, sister Helen.

There will be a prayer service at the Sheboygan Retirement Community Center, 930 N 6th Street, Sheboygan, on April 27th at 1:00. It will be officiated by the Reverend James E. Connell (Fr. Jim) of Holy Name of Jesus Parish.
