Monroe H. Gierke, age 96, of 624 N. 27th St, Sheboygan, died peacefully Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Sunny Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Monroe was born June 4, 1917 in Sheboygan, WI to Gustav and Florence (Manley) Gierke. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Sheboygan High School, Class of 1936. He later pursued courses in management, finance and real estate.
Always active, always involved, always ready to serve, Monroe proudly listed the following among his list of accomplishments during his 96 years.
He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ where he formerly served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, charter member of the Men's Brotherhood Club, chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee, member of the Property Committee and the Morning Breakfast Club.
Early in his life he was an active scouter, serving as a cub master, scout master and a member of the commissioner's staff.
He was a Past Exalted Ruler of Sheboygan Elks Lodge #299 and a member of the Past Exalted Ruler's Club. He served on several local and state Elk Lodge committees and was a contributing member of the Elks National Foundation.
He was a member of Masonic Cassia Lodge #167 F & A.M., past president of Sheboygan County Scottish Rite Club, past president of Sheboygan County Shrine Club, a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite bodies of Milwaukee, a member of Clan #50 Hillbilly Degree, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the International Association of Turtles, a member of the Tripoli Shrine Temple of Milwaukee and a member of the Tripoli Shrine Animal Unit with which he marched as Donald Duck and served as the unit's treasurer for 28 years.
Monroe was associated with the Kohler Company for 43 years and became a member of the Quarter Century Club. After his retirement, he became a licensed real estate broker.
He also served on the City of Sheboygan Board of Review for 16 years.
Those who knew Monroe would be quick to tell you, however, that his true essence as a person went far beyond a list of accomplishments on a piece of paper. They would tell you of his contagious positive spirit that would brighten the day of all he encountered. They would tell you of his endless array of little stories that would be sure to evoke nostalgic visions of days gone by or to elicit a smile and a chuckle from all fortunate enough to hear them. They would tell you of his willingness to lend a hand to all who needed a hand. And most of all, they would tell you of his total devotion to his beloved family and to the countless treasured friends with whom he had forged lasting bonds over the course of his lifetime.
Monroe is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Suzanne Gierke of Two Rivers, WI and by his grandson and granddaughter-in-law Andrew Gierke and Jennifer Bramstedt Gierke of Elkhart Lake, WI.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy and a brother, Leroy.
As Monroe requested, a private memorial service will take place at Ebenezer United Church of Christ, officiated by Rev. Dr. Roger J. Mealiff. Interment will take place at
