Thomas Charles Butts

Tom was born on January 9th, 1934, and passed away on June 22, 2014. Beloved husband to his wife Mary of 55 years; proud father of Thomas (Robin) Charles, M.D. of St. Louis, MO, Catherine (Leon Orszanski) Butts of Delevan, WI and Susan (Bill) Reader of Phoenix, AZ; loving grandfather to grandsons Andrew and Parker Charles and granddaughter Kirby Charles.

Preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Lydia Gardenier Butts, a brother Jerome Butts (World War II) and two sisters, Carol and Mary Butts.

He attended the Boys Technical High School in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated from Lawrence University, Appleton, WI and received his Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Tom taught in Plainfield, WI for 1 year, Marinette, WI for 3 years and at Sheboygan South High School for 20 years also serving as the boys swimming coach. He finished his career at Kettle Moraine Correctional School as a GED teacher. He inspired many students with his dedication and knowledge. Tom was a life guard for over 60 years starting at 16 with the Milwaukee Recreation Department. He also taught swimming and life guarded for the Sheboygan Recreation Department as well as being the summer swim coach. He finished his life guarding at the Sheboygan YMCA where he also participated in the Swim for Life program logging over 2,000 miles. He served as the treasurer for the Friends of Kohler-Andrae State Park for over 15 years and was a member of the Board of Directors. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and served as a Boy Scout leader. He was very proud of his three children and three grandchildren. He attended many concerts, and sporting events for them as well as musical events and Irish dancing competitions for his grandchildren. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014 from 4:00 P.M. until the time of Memorial Mass at 5:00 P.M. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1305 Humboldt Ave., Sheboygan, with Fr. Paul Fliss officiating.

A special thank you to the Dr. Kevin Johnson and the second floor staff of Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. In lieu of flowers memorials to Friends of Kohler Andrae State Park endowment fund or the Sheboygan YMCA are appreciated.
