Flora, James E.

James Edward Flora, 72, died Sunday July 13 at Willowpark Residence in New Holstein.

Jim was born July 6, 1942, to Robert and Rosella Flora in Dodgeville, WI. He graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1960 and from the University of Wisconsin Platteville in 1967. Jim taught social studies for 40 years at New Holstein High School, where he also coached football for several years. He retired in 2007.

Jim served on the New Holstein Public Library Board for 30 years (20 years as its president), was a past president of the New Holstein Chamber of Commerce, and was a longtime Boy Scout merit badge advisor. A past president of the Wisconsin Council for Social Studies, he was also active in Economics Wisconsin, recently serving as its State Program Director. Through his association with the National Council for Economic Education, Jim taught economics for teachers in Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Croatia. He wrote for C-Span and for The Master Teacher publications.

Jim was a recipient of the Kohl Education Achievement Award, District Teacher of the Year Award, and Wisconsin Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award. He was named New Holstein's Distinguished Person of the Year for 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; his sons Geoffrey (Tina) Flora in Edmond, Oklahoma, and Matthew (Tammy) Flora in Elkhart Lake; his daughter Lisa Flora in Oklahoma City; his grandchildren Christina Flora in Madison, Lane in Oklahoma, Rachael and Megan in Elkhart Lake; his stepson William (Kim) Brenner in Phoenix; his sisters Mary (Robert) Pfeiffer in Hartland and Jane Flora in Blanchardville; his brothers Richard (Wendy) in Forest Lake, MN and Michael (Diane) in Verona, WI; an aunt Ann (Ray) Reisdorf in Florida; Grace's sisters Betty Pruitt and Deborah Johnson in Newberry, MI; Connie (Roger) Latvala and Grace's brother Clifford (Diane) Bodine all in Kalamazoo MI. He is further survived by the mother of his children, Linda Griswold of Madison. He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday July 17, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Sippel Funeral Home 2618 Altona Avenue New Holstein, WI 53061.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the New Holstein Public Library or to the Flora Scholarship Fund at New Holstein High School.

Teaching was his life; thanks to all of Jim's former students who have maintained contact with him over the years. You were all very special to him.

Special thanks to the outstanding staff at Willowpark Residence, Dr. Pleviak, and the Calumet County Visiting Nurses who took such good care of Jim for the past four months.
