Wegner, Alred (Al, Sarge)

Alfred, (Al, Sarge) Wegner was born on April 1, 1932, in the town of Scott and died December 29, in Sarasota Florida, after returning from Christmas in Sheboygan with his family. At an early age, while living in Waldo, his family and friends dubbed him Honus Wagner because of his love and abilities in baseball. His family moved to Sheboygan, he attended St Paul's grade school and then North High. Before graduating in 1951, he participated in football, basketball, track and baseball. He also played Legion Ball for one year.

After high school and a stint in the Navy, Al helped organize and played baseball for a team sponsored by the Kingsbury Brewery. After 20 years, Al retired from the organization as their manager. During this time he met the other love of his life Lois.

Al and Lois were married on November 29, 1958. His family then became the focus and love of his life. Their daughter, Catherine has been a joy and an integral part of his life. She along with her husband, David (Mohr) has been his central focus since his retirement. His grandchildren or angels as he called them, provided him with many opportunities to be a sports spectator. Emily and Peter were devoted and loving to their grandfather.

After Al retired from playing baseball, he took up umpiring/referring: softball, baseball, football, basketball, and volleyball. He worked at Kingsbury Brewery until they closed their doors and then was employed at Schultz-Savo until 1991, at which time he retired to Sarasota, Florida.

Retirement did not slow Al's sporting endeavors. He was active in shuffleboard and became a Pro in 2001. He loved the game of horseshoes and spent time walking in the pool. He was the President of the Fun & Sports Club at Tri Par Estates, where he lived. He continued to be a part of his grandchildren's lives by daily phone conversations as they were growing up as well as frequent visits with them. He would either fly "home" to be with them or fly them to be with him in Florida.

Al became quite active at Beautiful Savior, in Sarasota, where his Florida family and friends are invited to services on Saturday, January 5, at 1 p.m. His family and friends both in Sarasota and Wisconsin will greatly miss Al. His Wisconsin family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Al's life on February 24, at the Elk's club in Sheboygan from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Al's name to create a scholarship for a North High graduate who has the same passion and love of sports, which Al had.
