Gorter, William

William Gorter, age 82, of Sheboygan, went home to his Lord and Savior Friday morning, January 25, 2013 after a short stay at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice with his loving family at his side.

Bill was born March 19, 1930 in Sheboygan to Wietze and Jennie (Van Der Veer) Gorter. He attended Sheboygan Christian Grade School and Sheboygan North High School. He was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard.

Bill was a lifelong, faithful member of First Christian Reformed Church.

On October 19, 1951 Bill and Joyce Ver Velde were united in marriage at First Christian Reformed Church. They were lifelong companions and best friends, always caring for one another and truly appreciating each other.

Bill began his employment as a tile and terrazzo mechanic at Cimarosti Terrazzo & Tile Co. and continued his career at Castellan Tile and Terrazzo, retiring in 1992.

Bill's interests included reading, listening to gospel and country music, enjoying nature, painting, watching TV, playing games with his grandchildren, and spending great times with his family and friends. He liked telling a good joke and had a great sense of humor.

In addition to his devoted wife, Joyce, he is survived by his children, Timothy (Donna) Gorter and their children, Joshua and Angela; Tamara (Bruce) Ten Haken and their children Stephanie (Zach) Vis, Shaun Ten Haken, and Spencer Ten Haken; Todd (Kimberly) Gorter; one brother, Lawrence (Shirley) Gorter; one sister, Wilma Gorter; one sister-in-law, Carol Gorter; one brother-in-law, Rodney (dear friend, Sevim Boussom) Ver Velde and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Harry and Mary Ver Velde; his brother, John Gorter and his sister, Anita Gorter.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at First Christian Reformed Church, 428 Geele Avenue, Sheboygan, WI 53083. Rev. Larry Meyer, Pastor, will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.

Bill's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to those who lovingly cared for him including the doctors and nurses at Aurora and the caregivers at Sunny Ridge and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice and his friends at dialysis. A special thanks to Pastor Larry and Donna "Mrs. Pastor" Meyer for their visits and words of encouragement.
