John is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Ella (Munnik) Gabrielse; 4 children, Sharon (Ben) Snoeyink of Grand Rapids, MI; Phyllis (Jim) Kramer of Lynden, WA; Tim (Kris) Gabrielse of Kohler, WI; and Greg (Cheri) Gabrielse of Sheboygan, WI; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Evangeline Fikkert and Edith DeHamer.

John was preceded in death by his parents, older sister, Gertrude, and younger brothers, George and Edwin.

John served the United States in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 till his honorable discharge in 1946. Along with his father and two brothers, he founded Gabe's Construction Co., Inc. in 1942. He retired from active involvement in the operation of the company in 1982 when he enjoyed boating in Florida. John and Ella moved to Lynden in 1998.

John was actively involved in the churches he belonged to, serving on numerous church councils and boards. His love of young people was evident in his volunteer work as a youth leader, both locally and nationally, in his church. He was also involved in many contractor associations, and served as Vice Commodore of the Sheboygan Yacht Club.

The family would like to thank the many Visiting Angels who took care of dad during the last 6 months of his life. Also a sincere thank-you to Whatcom Hospice House for the care and compassion shown to all of us during dad's last 36 hours.
