MORGANTON-Zelma Lindsay Newton, 95, of Morganton, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Cleveland County on Feb. 9, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Claude Lindsay and Cara Logan Lindsay. Zelma was a member of Southside Baptist Church, where she had the honor of being the oldest member. She retired from Skyland Textiles.
Left to cherish Zelma's memory are her daughters, Charlene Carpenter and her husband Everett of Morganton, and Melba Floyd and her husband Jim of Cleveland, Tenn.; grandchildren, Mark Carpenter, Bruce Carpenter, Jane Crisp, and Kris Jones; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Crisp, Sarah Crisp, Logan Carpenter, John Carpenter, Hannah Jones, Riley Jones, Amber Jaquins, Jason Cope, and Jordan Gibson; a great-great-granddaughter, Charlotte Jaquins; a sister, Audna Fortenberry of Morganton; a number of nephews and nieces; a special friend and caregiver, Pauline Smith; and a special friend and neighbor, Jack Morrison and family.
In addition to her parents, Zelma was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton "Tip" Newton; a grandson, Christopher Floyd; a great-granddaughter, Haley Lynn Jones; brothers, Cecil Lindsay and Joseph Hazel Lindsay; and a sister, Mavis Hunt.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
Funeral Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home

Burial: Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Casar, following the service
