Hocutt, Marie* - Shelby  
MARIE HOCUTT SHELBY-Marie Frances Sayles Hocutt, 93, a resident of Brookdale Shelby, passed away May 25, 2016, at Wendover Hospice in Shelby. Born Oct. 21, 1922, in Buncombe County, N.C., Mrs. Hocutt was the daughter of the late Hall Fletcher Sayles and Cora Elizabeth Herron Sayles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Hilliard Manly Hocutt. Mrs. Hocutt taught social studies for 20 years at North Rowan High School in Spencer. She attended Oakley High School in Asheville and graduated from Mars Hill Junior College in 1942 and Woman's College in Greensboro (now UNCG) in 1944. She was a devoted pastor's wife during her late husband's pastorate at Oakdale Baptist Church in Spencer, 1955-1970, and during his service as associational missionary of the Buncombe Baptist Association, 1944-1955. In her later years, she was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Spencer, where she sang in the choir for 35 years, taught Sunday School, and served as a Deacon. Mrs. Hocutt was an active member of the American Association of University Women and was a volunteer for Rowan Helping Ministries, Friends of Rowan Public Library, Crop Walk, and Dial Help. She was a pink lady at Rowan Medical Center, a donor and volunteer for the Red Cross bloodmobile, and volunteered at the polls in the Spencer precinct. She played the violin in the Salisbury Symphony. Around Spencer, Mrs. Hocutt was known as the "walking lady," having logged 25,000 miles of walking following her retirement from teaching. She also enjoyed traveling and had visited 6 of the 7 continents. Mrs. Hocutt is survived by her four children, Kathryn Hocutt Hamrick and husband Cline of Boiling Springs; Cynthia Hocutt Headrick of Seymour, Tenn.; Broadus Manly Hocutt and wife Samala of Charlotte; and Janice Elizabeth Hocutt of Raleigh. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Jason Hamrick (Amy), Leif Hamrick, Spencer Hamrick (Erika), Miles Hamrick (Alyssa), Adam Hocutt (Mallory), Ray Hocutt (Joanna), Audrey Wilson, and David Wilson. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Morgan Hamrick, Aaron Hamrick, Logan Calvert, Levi Hamrick, Isaac Hamrick, Austin Hamrick, Trevor Hamrick, Megan Hamrick, Leighton Hamrick, Colson Hamrick, Kayla Hocutt, and Kallie Hocutt. Love and heartfelt thanks to Brookdale Shelby and to Wendover Hospice for the loving care they extended to our beloved mother and grandmother. A memorial service for Mrs. Hocutt will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 27, 2016, at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, N.C., officiated by the Rev. Bonnie Doughtie. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury, officiated by the Rev. Franklin Myers. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the funeral. Interment will follow at the Oakdale Baptist Church cemetery in Spencer. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 156, Spencer, NC 28159. Online condolences may be made at www.summersettfuneralhome.com. Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Hocutt Family.
