Lackey, Jerry* - Lincolnton
LINCOLNTON – Jerry Paul Lackey, 69, of Lincolnton, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Covenant Bible Church with Rev. Nathan Grooms and Rev. Mike Devine officiating. Burial will follow in the Church of Our Saviour Woodside Episcopal Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Jerry was a respected business owner and community leader in both Lincolnton and Denver. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Hershel H. Lackey and Sarah Inez Harmon Lackey, and an older brother, Donald H. Lackey. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Vickie G. Lackey; his two daughters, Adeline L. Carson and husband Darron, and Elizabeth L. Duncan and husband Christopher; three grandchildren, Austin, Connor and Miller Carson; and two brothers, John Harmon Lackey of Cherryville, and Steve A. Lackey of Lincolnton. He was a 1964 graduate of Lincolnton High School, attended Lenoir-Rhyne College, and graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 1969 with an AB degree in Economics and Mathematics. After graduating from college, he served as a teacher in mathematics and was the assistant principal at Chesterfield Junior High School, Chesterfield, SC. After returning to Lincolnton in 1972, he and his younger brother, Steve, opened a clothing business in Lincolnton, "My Brother," which became a favorite of the youth in the area. He began his real estate career in 1977 and continued in this field over the past 39 years. During his career in the real estate field, he was the manager of Century 21 Town & Country Realty, co-owner and broker in charge of Coldwell Banker By The Lake Realty, owner of Jerry Lackey Realty, co-owner of Lackey and Whitley Realty, and owner of Jerry P. Lackey Appraisal Service, Inc. with offices in both Lincolnton and Denver, NC. He received his residential real estate appraiser's license in 1991 and his commercial appraiser's license in 1992. The appraisal company became, and remains, one of the largest and most respected appraisal firms in the area being approved by the majority of major lenders. He also served on the VA appraiser roster since 1988. In addition to his real estate enterprises, he had a number of smaller business endeavors with different close friends and family members. In addition to being well known in the tri-county area, he was instrumental in community involvement in the Lincolnton and Denver area. He served on numerous committees, board of directors, and organization memberships that worked to improve living in the area. He served on the church council for Emmanuel Lutheran Church (his family church since the early 1900s) , and served as Deacon at Covenant Bible Church for 25 years. He was recognized as the area's small businessman of the year in 1998 and Lincoln County Man of the Year in 2007. Although being involved with community activities and highly motivated with his business endeavors, he was deeply committed to his love of his Lord, his wife, his family, and his friends. He will best be remembered for his smile, regardless of his situation, his care, and his genuine concern for others, always endeavoring to treat everyone equally. Diagnosed with a fatal kidney disease in 1980 created the need for him to make a choice as to which path to take in life. He chose to work to survive and to become involved with sharing with others about overcoming life's challenges. He received a kidney transplant in 2000 and then was blessed again with another chance at life by receiving a second kidney transplant from a loving friend, Lincolnton native Debbie Pope. He and his loving wife, Vickie, who was always by his side, for many years traveled the area as ambassadors speaking to groups (large and small) sharing God's love and promoting tissue and organ donation and blood donation. He will be missed by all that knew him and his legacy and memory will live for as long as those whom he touched continue to survive. Memorials may be made to Covenant Bible Church Building Fund, PO Box 564, Lincolnton, NC 28093, or to LifeShare of the Carolinas, PO Box 32861, Charlotte, NC 28232. Warlick Funeral Home is serving the Lackey family.
