CONCORD- Coy Lee Freeman, 87, passed away Sept. 20, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center – NorthEast.
Visitation will be held at Wilkinson Funeral Home on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church Concord on Monday, Sept, 23, at 11 a.m. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The burial will take place at 4pm that afternoon at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The family will be at the Freeman home at 1017 Arrowhead Drive Concord.
Mr. Freeman was born Nov. 6, 1925 in Star, NC to Ira and Hattie Jane Freeman. He was the youngest of 15 children. Mr. Freeman joined the US Navy
at age 18 and served in Guam during WWII
. Upon completion of his service, he moved to Shelby, NC in 1947 where he met Madelyn Rebecca (Becky) Roberts. They married on June 20, 1948 at East Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. Lee and Becky lived in Shelby and Gastonia, NC until their move to Concord in 1963, where they lived ever since.
Mr. Freeman worked for Exxon Mobil for 30 years and Cabarrus Memorial Hospital for an additional 12 years. He enjoyed camping with friends, gardening and traveling with his wife. But his greatest joy was spending time with his large family which also included devoted nieces and nephews.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Becky; son, Ronald Freeman of Morganton, NC; daughter, Karen Thompson and husband, Henry Thompson of Concord; son, Doug Freeman and wife, Patricia (Patti) of Concord and son, Mark Freeman and wife, Gena Freeman of Concord. He also had 12 precious grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren that were his delight.
He is preceded in death by 14 siblings.
The Freeman and Thompson families would especially like to thank Drs. Geoffrey Rackoff, Michael Houston and Arvind Vasudevan as well as the compassionate nursing staff at CMC-NorthEast.
