JEFFERSON CITY, MO. - Diane Heffner, 65, of Jefferson City, Mo., died July 5, 2013, at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center surrounded by her family.
She was born Aug. 3, 1947, in Shelby, the only child of the late Dan and Mae Scruggs. She spent her childhood in Cliffside, often at her father's side. Diane is a former resident of Durham, and moved to Jefferson City in 2006 to be with her daughter, Angie Heffner Robyn, and two granddaughters, Emily Diane and Riley Robyn. Diane was a lifelong member of Cliffside Baptist Church and a current active member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, serving on the Children's Ministry Team and 175th Anniversary Celebration Committee.
She attended East Tennessee State University. Diane worked for Glaxo Smith Kline (formerly Burroughs Wellcome) for 33 years in the company's Human Resources Division, retiring in 2007 to spend more time with her family. Diane was known for her dedication, compassion and all-encompassing support of her customers and co-workers who often became her friends. In 2004, she received the President's Roll of Honor for Passion and Urgency.
Dedicated to her family, Grammi spent as much time as possible with her two granddaughters, Emily Diane and Riley, teaching them about her childhood, gardening, and the importance of Jesus and belonging to a church family. With them she shared many trips to her home state and to Washington, D.C., Branson, Kansas City (her heart city), Cancun and Disney World.
Diane was an extremely loyal friend and has many lifelong friends who have become family to her, especially her fellow unicorns and her daughter Angie's friends who she loved as her own children. Known for her thoughtfulness, generosity, and avid card-sending, she always remembered holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions, and concerns of her family and friends.
Diane enjoyed gardening and was a do-it-yourself repairperson, a skill and talent she learned from her Dad. She loved watching Duke basketball and Kansas City Royals baseball–attending her last Royals game on June 22nd with her granddaughter, Riley, and a group of dedicated friends who wanted to see her final wish carried out.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Angie Heffner Robyn, and her husband Tim of Jefferson City, Mo.; four grandchildren whom she loved with all of her heart, Emily Diane and Riley Robyn of Jefferson City, and Kayla Jo and Davis Robyn of Louisville, Ky.; her aunt, Betty Graham of Forest City; her "sister" Mary Scruggs Beason (Freddie) of Cliffside; cousins with whom she stayed in close contact, Bill Scruggs Jr. (Anne) and Joel Moore (Jane) of Cliffside, Lynn Church (David) of Greensboro, Ken Davis (LaVerne) of Belmont, Bobby Jones (Diane), Carolyn Crawley and Steve Davis (Wanda)of Forest City, Elizabeth Evans of Ellenboro, Sue Tate of Lutz, Fla., and Martha Hamrick of Ellenboro; and many special friends.
The family would like to extend their special gratitude to: caregivers, Lucy Buersmeyer, Kim Hubbard, and Jannie Dunbar; Dr. George Kistler for his years of going above and beyond for Diane; and the staff at Ellis Fischel–especially the AIU staff whom she looked forward to seeing on every visit. They would also like to thank the numerous friends, co-workers, neighbors and members of First Baptist Churches of Cliffside and Jefferson City who supported Diane and her family through a 13-year epic battle with cancer.
