Dorris Brooks

CARY- We lost a remarkable woman on Monday. Dorris C. Brooks, 90, passed away peacefully on December 24. She was born on Oct. 20, 1922, in Shelby, NC to J. Raymond and Mamie Leola Borders Cline.
Dorris, grew up in Shelby, NC, and attended Gardner Webb Junior College where she met the love of her life. After she graduated from Meredith College, Dorris traveled cross country, by train, to marry Bob, who was stationed at Camp Pendelton in San Diego, CA. After World War II, they settled in Raleigh where she taught in the Raleigh City/Wake County Schools, primarily the elementary grades.
Dorris loved playing bridge and was a member of several clubs over the years. She was also an avid golfer and was a member of Raleigh Country Club, was active in the Par Chasers, and Wildwood Green. During their retirement years, some of Bob and Dorris' fondest memories were of times spent at Emerald Isle with all of their golfing buddies.
Dorris was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years where she was an active member of the Livingston Johnson Sunday School Class.
Dorris was predeceased by her parents, four siblings, and her husband, Robert L. Brooks. She is lovingly remembered by her children Robert and Jo Brooks, Atlantic Beach, NC; David and Ellen Brooks, Battleboro, NC; Raymond and Betty Brooks, Clayton, NC; and Bill and Liz Brooks Shaffer, Westport, CT; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church
Funeral Service: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at First Baptist Church of Raleigh
Burial: A private interment will be held prior to the service at Raleigh Memorial Park
Funeral Home: Brown-Wynne Funeral Home is serving the Brooks family.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, New HDCP Vehicle Fund, 99 Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603 or Meredith College.
