SHELBY - Elma Haynes Mitchell, 65, formerly of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. She was the second oldest child born to the late Squire and Louise Bebee Haynes.
Elma was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawndale, where she joined at an early age, and was a graduate of Douglas High School. She was employed with Polygram in Grover for 13 years until she came down with M.S., which she valiantly fought for 16 years. She was a fun-loving, vibrant and very frank person who, when she was able, enjoyed planting flowers, gardening, sewing and crafts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William "Winkie" Haynes; and a sister, Velma Price.
Left to cherish her memory, her children, Monica Mitchell of Lawndale and André Mitchell of Charlotte; two brothers, Wilbert Haynes (Robin) of Shelby and Alvin Haynes of Lawndale; a sister, Jeanette McIntoch (Willie B.) of Lawndale; three grandchildren, Vestavian Mitchell, her pride and joy, of Lawndale, Paisley Mitchell, also of Lawndale, and Jaidan Mitchell of Gastonia; one aunt, Gladys Bebee of Pittsburgh, Penn.; special friends, Sheila and Lonnie Wilkinson of Rutherfordton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Willie B. McIntoch, 219 New Bethel Church Rd. in Lawndale.
A private service is scheduled.
