SHELBY-Mr. John Henry Schenck Sr., 95, formerly of 2150 Stony Point Road, Shelby, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Peak Resources Nursing Center in Cherryville.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1917, in Iredell County, to the late Julius and Sarah Hogue Schenck.
John worked for Burlington Industries in Cherryville for many years and retired from Eaton Corporation in Kings Mountain. He was a member of Washington Missionary Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He also did many odd jobs for people in the community and the church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alva Jay Webber Schenck; sisters, Mayola Carson, Magnolia Carson, Gwendolyn Gaines, Marie Wilson, Lenora Sibley and Lorene Bridges; and his brothers, Marshall Schenck, Robert Schenck, Ralph Schenck, Ray Schenck and Floyd Schenck.
He is survived by his children, Vivian S. Kelly of Southern Pines, John Henry Schenk Jr. of Shelby, Joanne Brower of Greensboro, and Alfred Schenck (Mary) of Centreville, Va.; grandchildren, Tamara Hutchinson (Keith) of Greensboro, Steven Kelly of Hope Mills, and John A. Schenck of Centreville, Va.; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Catherine Simpson of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother, J.B. Hogue of Toledo, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Friday at the church, and other times at 2150 Stony Point Road, Shelby.
