SHELBY – John Arthur Gullatte, Sr., 91, departed this life on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Shelby. He was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Opelika, Ala., to the late Gary Baxter and Mary Gullatte.
Mr. Gullatte was a hard working man who was employed with both Cleveland Lumber Company and Shelby Middle Schools for over 20 years each. He was a man with little formal education but, possessed a wealth of knowledge. He was a great cook and loved to feed people generously in his community. In addition, he was a great gardener, pool player and grandfather and was able to live to see his family expand to five generations.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Minnie Elaine Flack Gullatte; three sons, Joe Arthur Gullatte, Gary Baxter Gullatte, Sr. and John D. Pratt; his daughter, Brenda Joy Gullatte; and thirteen brothers and sisters, including his identical twin brother, Joe Oscar Gullatte.
He leaves to cherish his memory, Edward Gullatte (Maggie) of Shelby, Louise Gullatte of Jersey City, N.J. and John A. Gullatte, Jr. of Shelby; two good friends, Jack Rippy and L.C. Wilson, both of Shelby; and a host of grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; great-great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church, and at other times at the home of his son, Edward Gullatte, 315 Clegg St. in Shelby.
Funeral service: 3 p.m. Saturday at Hopper's Chapel Baptist Church
