KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Joseph Eli Allen, 88, of Summit Place, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009.
Born in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Robert Gideon Allen and Cornelia Batten Allen. Mr. Allen retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a registered civil engineer and was area construction engineer in Eastern North Carolina. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clayton. He served in the Marines before World War II
and in the Army during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant in General Patton's Third Army and was wounded while serving in Germany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Ennis Allen; two sisters, Trudy Jordan and Louise Eason; and two brothers, Thel Allen and Junius Allen.
Survivors include his son, Don Allen and wife, Carole, of Shelby; granddaughter, Michelle Black and husband, Shan, of Cherryville; grandson, Jeff Allen of Shelby; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Eli Black, Justin Black and Josh Black, all of Cherryville; brothers, Rudolph Allen and wife, Belle, of Clayton, and Roy Allen and wife, Helen, of Greensboro; sisters-in-law, Joann Ennis of Morehead City and Joyce Poe of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; brother-in-law, Eric Ennis of Raleigh; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 30, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Stamey Funeral Home and at the cemetery following the graveside service on Saturday.
