SHELBY - William Michael "Heidi" Gentry, 58, of 1213 White Avenue, gently departed this life on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born on Jan. 13, 1956, in Cleveland County, to Mrs. Lola Mae Gentry and the late Mr. Billy Gentry.
Michael was a 1974 graduate of Shelby High School, where he served as Vice President of the Student Body Association. He furthered his education at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Earlier in Michael's career, he successfully owned several businesses in Raleigh and Charlotte. During the last years of Michael's life, he fought courageously to overcome a serious heart condition.
Michael was an avid sports fan, but especially enjoyed collegiate basketball. He was a great Wolf Pack fan, but also loved the NBA including playoff basketball.
Michael was a loving and devoted son, father, brother, uncle and partner.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Beatrice Lockett; and his niece, Telisa Grier.
Those remaining to cherish Michael's memory are his adoring mother, Mrs. Lola M. Gentry of Shelby; his loving sisters, Shirley A. Robinson (Phil) of Kings Mountain and Billie Jo Gentry of Charlotte; two handsome sons, Jordan Tyler Gentry and Michael Dalton Gentry of Monroe and Shelby; a loving and dedicated fiancée whom he dearly loved; a niece, La Sandra Grier of Shelby; and a special aunt and uncle, Willie and Dorothy Woods, also of Shelby. Michael will be missed by a host of many nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, cousins and so many special friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel, and at other times at the home.
Funeral service: 1 p.m. Monday at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church. In addition to the visitation Sunday, Mr. Gentry will be available for view for one hour prior to the service at the church.
