Ottie Smith

SHELBY-- Ottie Mae Smith, 63, of 411 Murdock Circle, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at home. She was born on Dec. 26, 1949, in Cleveland County, to Rosa Lee Lowe Smith and the late James Haywood Smith.
Ottie was a graduate of Washington High School in Waco. She attended culinary school in Washington D.C. and was formerly employed with Walter Reed Amy Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She also attended cosmetology school at Cleveland Technical College and was a licensed C.N.A.
Ottie was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and held various positions over the years. She was president of the J.L. Moore choir, worship team leader, president of the pastor's aide, Sunday school teacher for the young adults and adult women, vacation bible school teacher, president of the senior usher board, kitchen committee worker, adult missionary teacher, member of the Gospel choir and Sunday school superintendent.
In her spare time, Ottie enjoyed crafts, cooking and decorating foods, sewing and green plants.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son, Antonio Lavan Smith; a sister, Jeanette Hartgrove; and a godson, Damian Washington.
She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Rosa Lee Lowe Smith of Shelby; four sisters, Catherine Smith of Fort Washington, Md., Geraldine Clark (Wendell) and Lena Smith, both of Shelby, and Ruth Harris of Whitsett; four brothers, James N. Smith (Shelly) of Bronax, Va., Jerry A. Smith (Joni) of Shelby, Golden Smith of Charlotte, and Bobby Thompson of Greensboro; a special uncle and aunt, Edward Lowe and Lallage Clements, both of Shelby; three additional aunts and one additional uncle; a godson, Louis Guest of Shelby; special friends, Johnnie Parker and Wanda Guest; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church on Friday, and at other times at the home.
Funeral Service: 2 p.m. Friday at Hopewell Baptist Church
