GASTONIA - Lt. Col. Eugene Tiddy, retired from the United States Air Force, 89, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Cleveland County on March 29, 1923, son of the late James and Anna McGinnis Tiddy.Col. Tiddy was a graduate of University of Maryland and a USAF combat veteran who served during World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars. During his military career as a pilot, he was the recipient of many medals and citations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, after 28 years of service, due to wounds he received in combat during the Vietnam War. He proudly taught Air Force Junior ROTC at Ashbrook High School before finally retiring. He was a long-time and active member of both Parkwood Baptist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and deacon, and the Gastonia Evening Lions Club where he was a former president and a former District Governor of District 31C.He is survived by two sons, Gary Tiddy of New Bern, and James Allen" Tiddy of Gastonia; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Hazel Allen Tiddy; son, Gerald Manning Tiddy and sisters, Leona Trexler and Verna Mae Tolleson.
