LAWNDALE - Franklin Lee Meeks, 57, of 137 Nolan Road, departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. He was born on Aug. 13, 1956, in Cleveland County.
Franklin was a 1975 graduate of Burns High School. He furthered his education by attending two years at Barber Scotia College and graduating from Shaw University earning a B.A. in Criminal Justice in 1995. His employment included working as a police officer with the Concord Police Department for 13 years and Chrysler Corp in Detroit, Mich., where he was a supervisor. In addition, he was the owner of his own cleaning service in Southfield, Mich.
Franklin joined Ramseur Baptist church at an early age and was active while growing up with the children's and young adult programs under the leadership of the Rev. R.L. Garvin. Franklin was a mason and was affiliated with the Mount Zion Lodge # 26 (PHA) in Concord, and Charlotte Consistory # 35 (PHA) and Rameses Shrine Temple # 51 (PHA), both in Charlotte. His pastimes included gardening, computers, chess and working on cars.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Leila Pryor Meeks; and two brothers, Bobby Gene Pryor and Larry Lee Pryor.
Left to cherish his memory are Ralph and Sadie Mae Surratt Pryor, who raised him; six brothers, Roger Meeks (Wyoming) of Kings Mountain, Charles Pryor of Southfield, Mich., Ralph Pryor, Jr. (Ann) of Shelby, Raymond Pryor (Brenda) of Concord, Craymond Pryor (Betty) of Shelby, and Anthony Pryor (Trina) of Shelby; eight sisters, Joann McCoy (Robert) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carolyn Powell (Joe) of Charlotte, Helen Miller (Tony) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Linda Meeks Holton (Hiram) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Nevadaer Pryor, Evelina Hamrick (Darryl),Wilma Smith (Rev. Frankie) and Dorothy Woods, all of Shelby; a special uncle, Rev. Gene Pryor (Ruth) of Shelby; three special aunts, Cecilia Johnson (Curtis) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pauline Pryor and Janie B. Pryor, both of Shelby; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, and at other times at 3144 Old School Road in Shelby.
Funeral service: 12:30 p.m. Friday at Ramseur Baptist Church
Officiated by: The Rev. Billy Ramseur, and the Rev. Gene Pryor delivering the eulogy
Burial: Will take place at the church cemetery.
