SHELBY-- Lemuel "Hoyle" Gold, 91, of 2957 West Stagecoach Trail, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at his home. He was surrounded by his loving family when he went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born Nov. 13, 1921, to the late Joe and Julia Elliott Gold. Preceding him in death were his siblings, Milton, Palmer, Griffen, Ben, Joe, Julia, Mary Susan, and Rebecca.
The Guest Book is expired.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Helen; children, Joe (Rodella) Gold, Brenda Whisnant, Nancy (Phil) Graham, and Susan (Ron) Cole; grandchildren, Trey (Haley) Whisnant, Amber (Jay) Hollifield, Jason (Emily) Gold, Anna (Jason) Ledford, James Gold, Andy Cole, Robert Cole, and step-granddaughter Amanda (Jimmy) Swindell; and great-grandchildren, Cort and Scout Whisnant, Jude Ledford, Noah Gold, and Jay Swindell.
Hoyle served in the US Air Force in WWII from 1942-1945, where he was stationed in Iceland. After the war, he worked in textiles and then grew cotton on the family farm. When his children started coming along, he started to work at Carolina Freight in Cherryville, along with his five brothers, where he worked for 32 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed being able to spend more time with his family. He loved to read Louis L'Amour westerns. He was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and Duke Blue Devils Basketball. One of his favorite hobbies was playing golf with his close friends. He was a life long member of Big Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon numerous times. He was a member of the Camp Call Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner.
Hoyle Gold will be remembered for his love of family, friends, his church, and his God. We will never forget his keen sense of humor, the twinkle in his eyes, his gentle spirit, his strength of character, integrity, sound judgment, and his steadfast devotion to his wife, children, and being "Paw Paw" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was one who could be depended on to engage an audience with an interesting story or a wholesome joke. He gave lavishly from a kind and gentle heart. All who knew him were truly blessed. The examples he has given us will live on in us, and we will miss him dearly.
The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Davis and his staff (Teresa, Cindy, and Kim) as well as Dr. Rob Laney for their kind loving care.
The family would also like to thank the Hospice Staff who assisted the family.
