SHELBY-Joseph David Wood, of Shelby, died Dec. 10, 2012, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's, at the age of 82. He was born in "Irish Creek", Rockbridge County, Va. Our sadness at the death of our father, brother, husband, and grandfather is tempered by our extreme joy in the knowledge that he is with his Lord and Savior. Joseph honorably and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a member of the Mosquito's 6147 Tactical Control Group.
In addition to his parents, three sisters and one brother, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Wood McGinnis; and grandson, Rodney "Tyler" McGinnis.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Barbara Cordell Wood of Shelby; his sister, Melvin Bolton of Shelby; brother in law Thomas Cordell and wife Jane Cordell of Asheville; children, Joseph "David" Wood III of Odenton, Md., Carol Wood of Sarasota, Fla., Kimberly Mull and husband Rush Mull of Shelby, and Michael Wood and wife Millie Wood; and grandchildren, Matthew Joseph McGinnis and wife Carmen McGinnis of Rock Hill, S.C., Jesse Greene of Shelby, Evan Wood and Neil Wood of Columbia, Md., and Sara Mac Wood of Shelby.
The family would like to thank White Oak Manor for their loving care of our beloved father & grandfather.
Joe started his career in the finance business in 1957. During his profession, he and Barbara lived in the following cities: Oxen Hill, Md., Miami, Fla., Columbia, S.C., Statesville, Greenville, S.C., Charlotte, Winston Salem, New Orleans, La., Atlanta, Ga., Long Island, N.Y., then finally residing in Shelby for the past 42 years. Joe owned and operated Shelby Auto Sales for over 30 years.
Joe was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans' (DAV), and a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church.
Joseph was known for his cookouts that many in Shelby enjoyed over on Hill Street with his well known cooking and grilling skills. Joe's death will leave a void in our lives but we are grateful for all the time we had with him.
