FOREST CITY- Yates Hamilton "Ham" Eaker, DDS, 82, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013. He was diagnosed with acute leukemia on Nov. 20. He was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Morganton to Marvin Yates Eaker and Nora Brittain Eaker.
Hamilton served in the United States Navy Dental Corps in San Diego and the Philippine Islands from 1956-1959, then practiced dentistry in Forest City from 1960-1991. He served as a Forest City volunteer fireman, was elected to city council, was a member of First United Methodist Church and was very active in Forest City Jaycees. More recently, he was active with Woodmen of the World. He loved to travel and was an avid outdoorsman.
Hamilton is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joanne Horn Eaker; daughter, Judy Eaker Clement and husband Bill Grueneberg of Los Angeles; sons, David Yates Eaker and wife Ronda Dennis Eaker of Forest City, and James Hamilton Eaker and wife Susan Heath Eaker of Durham; grandchildren, Zachary Yates Eaker and wife Mallory Davis Eaker of Forest City, Benjamin David Eaker and wife Rachel Rotberg Eaker of Chapel Hill, Collin Brittain Eaker of Raleigh, William Hamilton Eaker, Emma Brittain Eaker and Evelyn Marie Eaker of Durham; and great-grandson, Finn Yates Eaker of Forest City.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Gene Carol Eaker.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Padgett and King Mortuary, Forest City. A reception of friends will also follow the funeral service on Monday in the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall.
Funeral Service: 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church
Burial: There will be a private graveside ceremony at Cool Springs Cemetery with military honors by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
