SHELBY - Bessie Lee Spake Conley, 99, died June 17, 2013, at Hospice Cleveland County.

Born in Cleveland County on October 24, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lynn and Eula Hoyle Spake.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Hugh Grady Conley. She is the last survivor of the Shelby High Class of 1933 .She assisted her husband in Conley's Grocery Stores and was a Homemaker. She was a member of Ross Grove Baptist Church, former member of Frances Extension Homemakers Club, Shelby City Park Senior Group, Neal Senior Center, volunteered at the Shelby Senior Center, and later volunteered at the Neal Senior Center dining room and gift shop.
She enjoyed crafts and was a beautiful seamstress and once made clothes for Belk Fabric Department when it was located downtown Shelby. She enjoyed traveling and was always ready to go. Until July 2011, she traveled with her daughter Betty at the Arts and Craft Shows with The Betty Mayberry Cookbook throughout the southeast. At the age of 98 1/2 she was best known for her brilliant mind. If her body was as sharp as her mind she would be kicking football.
