SHELBY - Carl Eugene McSwain, 72, of 2410 Eleanor Drive, departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. He was born on May 25, 1941, in Cleveland County, to the late Clinton and Virginia Ruth Williams McSwain.
Carl attended Green Bethel High School in Boiling Springs, where he played basketball. He was employed with Cone Mills for approximately 12 years until he became disabled.
Carl was a member of Living Water Christian Ministries in Shelby where he served as a trustee emeritus, senior group member, men's ministry mentor, commodities ministry member and he sang on the men's choir. He was also the father and elder statesman of his church.
Carl loved singing and was passionate about it. He formerly sang with the Five Star's of Shelby. In addition to singing, Carl loved people, loved to laugh and was a person who helped to encourage and bring joy to those around him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lessie Ross McSwain; one son, Darryl McSwain of Lincolnton; two daughters, Cathy Vinson (Richard) of Shelby and Samantha Stith (Kenneth) of Petersburg, Va.; a sister, Dianne McCluney (John) of Shelby; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one aunt, Jennie Ruth Phillips of Shelby; three nephews; two brothers-in-law, W.T. Ross (Helen) of Blacksburg, S.C. and Dwight Ross of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters-in-law, Essie Ross, Eula Mae Thomas and Loretta Roland; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and at other times at the home.
Funeral service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Living Water Christian Ministries Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter St., Shelby

Burial: Will take place at Robinson Chapel Cemetery in Blacksburg, S.C.
