COLUMBUS - Hazel Ward Harris, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, in the Medical Facility of Tryon Estates, Columbus.

Born in Spindale, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Cora Causby Ward. She was a stock broker for Thompson and McKinnon and later Johnston and Lane Securities retiring in 1994. She moved to Polk County in 1992 coming from Shelby at the opening of Tryon Estates.
Hazel was a volunteer with American Cancer Society holding every office during her 16 years of service. She was given the Citizen of the Year citation for that organization in 1985. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing, and reading about stocks and companies and their strategies. Their rose garden at Tryon Estates was enjoyed by everyone. Hazel was a member of Tryon Presbyterian Church, Tryon.
Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Frederick "FTB" Harris of Tryon Estates; two grandchildren, Sabrina Southards of Ivanhoe and Mark Susie (Fiona) of Morrisville; three great-grandchildren; a step-daughter, Anita H. Taft (Donald) of Charlotte; Stepson, C. T. Harris (Jane) of Charlotte; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Mitchum Taylor; a sister, Polly; and brothers Donald, Homer, James, Hicks and Roger.
The family wishes to thank Carol Walker, her personal caregiver for her faithful and outstanding care for many years and also the staff at Tryon Estates all of whom were deeply loved by Hazel.
Memorial service: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of Tryon Estates
