ELLENBORO-- Howard Daves, 89, of 2772 Tan Yard Road, passed away, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Hospice at Wendover.

A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Feb. 1, 1924, to the late James Thomas Daves and Lala Hamrick Daves in Polkville. Howard lived a full and prosperous life. He was retired from the NC Department of Transportation after 30 years of service and was accomplished farmer and agriculturist. He was known by his friends and colleagues as kind hearted and hard working. Mr. Daves also served in the US Army during WWII.
Mr. Daves was a man who put his family first. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family will always remember him as a great story teller and jokester, and as the "Professor".
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Guynell Hoyle Daves; son, Gary Bruce Daves; and four brothers, Homer Daves, Huber Daves, Donnell Daves and James (Jim) Daves.
He is survived by two daughters, Vickie Daves Stallings and husband Paul, Jr. of Shelby and Sara Daves Mauney and husband, Forest of Ellenboro; five grandchildren, Chad Reynolds and wife Kelly of Lawndale, Drew Stallings and wife Jenni of Shelby, Amy Stallings of Shelby, Tara Mauney of Lawndale and Jessie Mauney Hudson and husband, EJ of Ellenboro; five great-grandchildren, Caitlynn and Carsyn Reynolds, Trejan and Summer Crosby, and Paisley Stallings; brother, Jesse Daves and wife Polly of Ellenboro; and three sisters, Doris Turner and Elaine Whitaker both of Shelby and Patsy Long of Spartanburg, S.C.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at Stamey Funeral Home, Fallston.
Funeral Service: 3 p.m. Friday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, Fallston
Officiating: The Rev. Walter Daves and Dr. Dennis Bingham
Burial: Will follow in the Polkville Baptist Church Cemetery
