SHELBY-Alexander Rhett Chamberlain passed peacefully at 24 years of age in the company of close family on March 31, 2013, at 5:46 a.m., following complications from a hiking accident in Wilson Creek Gorge.
Rhett was born June 26, 1988, in Shelby, to Steven and Kathe Chamberlain. He was the youngest of three brothers. He was pursuing his Master's degree in Economics at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte following completion of his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from North Carolina State University. He was employed by SABIC of Huntersville. Throughout his time at Shelby High School, Rhett excelled as a student athlete and mentor with the basketball program. He had an unusually dry wit, while simultaneously retaining a unique warmth in his sense of humor. He loved to read, travel, eat well, and spend time with friends and family.
He is survived by his parents, Kathe and Steven Chamberlain; brothers and their wives, Austin and Brittany Chamberlain, and Reid and Katie Chamberlain; grandmother, Elizabeth Chamberlain; and long time girlfriend, Sara Cheaney.
Also surviving are aunt and uncles, Camille and David Chamberlain and Henry Steenken; cousins, Allison and Adam Abramson, Ashley and Clint Herbison, and Syndney Steenken; as well as numerous close friends.
He is preceded in death by grandparents, Marion and John Steenken and William Chamberlain.
Funeral Service: 3 p.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Shelby. A reception will follow.
