SHELBY-- Sophia Kilgore Bass, 93, of 306 Wilson Street, departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Cleveland Regional Medical in Shelby. Born on Dec. 16, 1919, in Georgia, Sophia was one of 12 children born to John and Rosena Peak Kilgore.
The Guest Book is expired.
Sophia graduated from Ellis Chapel High School where she was valedictorian of her class. After high school, she left Shelby briefly and went to Rhode Island to work. Returning to Shelby, she married Shelby's first black police officer Captain Edward Lucius Bass and to this union two children were born, Richard and Sherri. Her employment in Shelby included Gardner Webb University, Clyde Short and the C.L. Vaughn family for a number of years.

Although she regularly attended Mount Calvary Baptist Church with her late husband, Sophia was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Earl, where she was involved with the Willing Workers. Her civic service included being involved with the Shelby police officer's wives association.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.
Left to cherish precious memories of her is one son, Richard Bass, and one daughter, Sherri Bass Howell, both of Shelby; a sister, Louise Freeman of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Timothy Bass (Carmita) of Raleigh, and Tia Nicole Littlejohn (Patrick) of Shelby; three great-grandchildren, Eric McCauley, whom she was especially close to, of Shelby, Taylor Sophia Bass of Lithonia, Ga. and Lauren Elizabeth Bass of Raleigh; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
