CLAREMONT - William "Bill" Luther Blanton, 73, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at the Brian Center East. He was born Sept. 29, 1940, in Cleveland County, the son of Luther and Dora Ledbetter Blanton.

A 1959 graduate of Shelby High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former deacon of Lawndale Baptist Church in Lawndale. Bill enjoyed square dancing, woodworking and was a caring person. He knew many people and was loved by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Betty Blanton, Julia Moss, Katherine Bridges; and an infant sister, Diane Blanton.
Survivors include a son, William L. Blanton, Jr. and his wife Tracy, of Sherrills Ford; a daughter, Mary Etta Blanton of Shelby; three step-daughters; a sister, Sadie Garver and husband Carol, of Lawndale; a brother, Doug Blanton and wife Shirley, of Casar; two grandchildren, Ashley Ervin and husband Shaun of Sherrills Ford, and Preston Blanton of Sherrills Ford; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; the mother of his children, Mary McMurry; and his second wife, Debbie Blanton.
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Funeral service: 1 p.m. Saturday at Catawba Funerals and Cremations
