SHELBY - On July 23, 2012, the Lord took Mary Stewart Fortenberry, 94, into his loving arms while at Hospice Cleveland County.
Mary graduated from Bethware High School in 1935 and afterwards held a variety of jobs. She and her late husband, William S. "Dub" Fortenberry owned and operated Dub's grocery on South Lafayette Street in Shelby for many years. After her husband's death, she worked as a cashier at Jackson's Cafeteria where she made many friends and acquaintances. "Miss Mary" was a lifelong member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church and faith-fully served as a Sunday School teacher for many years as well as belonging to the Friendship Circle which she loved. She made the best biscuits, pies, cakes, and fried chicken in town and was active in Lily Women's Club and in school activities of her children.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Linda F. Radeker and husband Gwynn of Shelby, Anne F. Lutz and her husband Robert of Moore, SC; grandchil-dren, Lisa Bumgarner of Cherryville, Robert "Rob" Lutz, Robin Lutz Wright and husband Chris, Spain Lutz and wife Kari, Jonathan Lutz; great grand-children, Raven and Franklin Lutz, Eli, Lutz and Eden Wright, Olivia and William Lutz who are twins.
A celebration of life service will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Dr. Valori Sherer will be officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
