CASAR - Edna Imogene Murray Slachetka, 68, of 130 Zoar Church Road, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at home. Born Oct. 31, 1945, in Aitkin, Minn., she was a daughter of the late William Edwin Murray and Alice Frances March Murray.

She was a member of the Kingdom Hall, Shelby East. Her work history includes dairy farming from 1980 until 2012 with her last farm being in Conrath, Wis. She was a program development officer for the National Tribal Development Association from 2003 until the present. She was a farm advocate on the Land Loss Prevention Project, Inc. in Durham from 1996 until 2003. She was an intervention worker for the Time-Out Abuse Shelter, INC. in Ladysmith, Wis., from 1995 until 1999. Her related volunteer experience includes Certified OWEESTA (First Nations) Credit Councilor, board member National Family Farm Coalition Executive Committee, Treasurer, and the chair of the National Family Farm Coalition Credit Task Force.
Mrs. Slachetka received her Liberal Arts in Spanish from Gaston Community College in 1967, Liberal Arts in Mathematics from Gaston Community College from 1964 until 1966, Applied Science in Accounting from Cleveland Community College from 1985 until 1986, Ag and Natural Resources and Business Management from Lac Courte Oreilles Community College from 2000 until 2001.
Her many awards include Cleveland County Farmer of the Year(1989), USDA Certificate for training USDA Outreach and State Directors from an Advocate's point of view(1998), North Carolina Fruit Award for twenty years of service promoting rural justice, NC Association of Black Lawyers' Land Loss Prevention Project(2003), and the National Tribe Develpoment Association Employee of the Year(2005).
Survivors include her husband, John S. Slachetka; one brother, William Edwin Murray III and wife Judy Hubbard Murray of Fallston; and one sister, Patrice M. Thompson of Tucson, Ariz.
