SHELBY - Cleveland "Cleve" Cornelious Adams, 82, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Hospice Wendover. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Jesse Cornelious and Ola Mae Shockley Adams.
Cleve was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for nearly 50 years, served as a deacon and sang in the choir. He worked at J.P. Stevens and retired from Doran Mills as a supervisor. Cleve Served in the U.S. Army and received several medals for his service, including Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with two Bronze stars, Purple Heart, UN Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He loved flowers and gardening. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
In addition to his parents, Cleve is preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Hendrick Adams.
Cleve is survived by his wife of 17 years, Carolyn Hawkins Adams; two sons, Bruce Adams of Shelby and Mike Blanton of Kansas City, Miss.; three daughters, Gail Adams Beam of Shelby, Jan Buchanan and husband Stuart of Austin, Texas, and Lynn Styers of Shelby; two sisters, Annette Martin of Mooresboro and Erma Jean Parker and husband E.W. of Shelby; eight grandchildren, Will Beam and wife Jenny, Maranda Adams and husband T.C. Burgess, Jacob Beam and girlfriend Erika Rippy, Tyra Silvers and husband Chris, Tracie Rodriguez, Matt and wife Mandy Styers, Holly Wesson and husband Jamie, Jessica Randel and husband Tom, and Michael Blanton; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Hospice Administration, staff and his special caregivers for all the care Cleve received.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the service.
Funeral service: 1 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church
Officiated by: The Rev. Greg Martin
Burial: Will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors
