LAWNDALE - Leila Mae Pryor Watkins, 72, of 3601Rube Spangler Road, departed this life on July 18, 2014, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.

She was born May 28, 1942, in Cleveland County, to the late Moe Watson and the late Charlie Lou "Mitchell" Pryor Hayes.

Mrs. Watkins was a member of Community Baptist Church in Lawndale. She was a gospel singer and belonged to a quartet group in Lake Lure for over 40 years. She was employed with Central Furniture in Hickory, NC for 15 years. Mrs. Watkins was a firm believer in helping anyone that she could. Among her favorite things to do, she enjoyed eating out.

Mrs. Watkins was married to her husband, Nelson Watkins for 56 years and 356 days just shy of 57 years of marriage. To their union, eight children were born.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Tommy Watkins and Ricky Wat-kins; a cousin she reared in the home, Mary Haynes; two brothers, William Hayes and Edward Hayes; one sister, Sadie Watkins and two grandsons, Travis Watkins and Ronald Hillman.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Nelson Watkins; her children, Shirley Wilson of Shelby, Bobby Watkins of Kings Mountain, NC, Diane Watkins, Patsy Watkins, Frank Watkins and Stanley Wat-kins all of Shelby; grandchildren who were raised like her own, Celeste Ruff and Kierra Bostic both of Shelby, Rickey Watkins of Cherryville, NC and Jeff Watkins of Lattimore, NC; 16 additional grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her step-mother, Annie Mckinzie of Shelby; two step-brothers, Robert L. Watson (Jeraldine) of Shelby and John E. Watson of Florida; one step-daughter, Pastor Dorothy B. Davis of Char-lotte, NC; four sisters-in-law, Margaret Schenck, Hattie Mae Schenck, New Zealand Ross and Gladys Bines; two brothers-in-law, T.K. Watkins and Raymond Watkins; two special friends, Arnetha Brooks and Gwen Campbell and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and special friends, Patricia Parks and Sarah Park

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Revs. Alan Byrd officiating and Thomas Ramseur delivering the eulogy.

Burial will take place at Community Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3 p.m. Saturday.
