SHELBY - Charlie Gene Ashe, 62, of 621 Lineberger St., the son of the late Wilma Ashe and the late Cary McKinney, departed this life on Aug. 18, 2014, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.

A native and resident of Cleveland County, Charlie attended Shelby High School and received his di-ploma from Isothermal Community College in Rutherford County. He later furthered his education and earned his Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Cleveland Technical College (now Cleveland Community College). For six years, he served in the United States Army and the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged. He returned to Shelby, where he started his professional career with Cleveland County Animal Control. He worked several years for Shelby Printing, before returning to work for Cleveland County, where he was hired by the Sheriff's Department. During his tenure there as a law enforcement officer, he worked in several professional capacities, including roles as a detention of-ficer, road deputy, narcotics officer, criminal investigator and was promoted to shift supervisor before retiring after 20 years of service.

During retirement, he served as a volunteer and mentored young people at Partner's with Kingston Youth (PKY) in Kingstown, NC. He enjoyed his service at PKY immensely and remained in contact with several participants of the program.
Those left to cherish extraordinary memories and celebrate his life, his daughters, Shawana Ge'Nea Ashe of Charlotte, NC and Tiffney Herndon of Gastonia, NC; two brothers, Robert F. Ashe of Washington, D.C. and George "Mackie" Ashe (Chetha)) of Shelby; a sister, Gallena Ashe Joyner (George) of Shelby; four nieces, Torrena Brown (Erwin) of Boiling Springs, NC, Dionne Ashe of Shelby, Deshante Ashe of Charlotte and Natasha Suber (Darryl) of Cornelius, NC; a granddaughter, Kennedy Rhoden and a host of beloved great-nieces and great-great nieces, cousins, other relatives and very special friends, all whom he adored.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Strickland Maddox officiating and the Rev. Michael A. White Sr. delivering the eulogy.

Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1 p.m. Saturday at the church and other times at 202 Mer-it Drive in Shelby.
