SHELBY- Dorothy Lee Wray Beam, 87, of 117 Chestnut St. Shelby, N.C. departed this life on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Wendover Hospice in Shelby. She was born on Dec. 29, 1926, in Cleveland County, N.C. to the late Bird Wray and the late Zinnie Mae Hambrick Anderson.
Mrs. Beam was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she served on the cooking committee. Mrs. Beam was known for her culinary skills and was employed with several establishments throughout the years which included Rose Hill, White Oak Manor (formerly Shelby Convalescent Center), Shelby Café, Cleveland Regional Medical Center among others. She loved to cook and shared her gift with not only her family but, their friends as well. She was also known in her community as Chestnut Street's "Candy Lady".
Mrs. Beam was a virtuous woman who dearly loved her family and not only reared her own children but, helped rear her grandchildren as well. In addition to being with her family, she enjoyed playing bingo and cards.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Beam; one daughter, Dorothy Ann Cannon (Elbert)); her sons, Hubert Raper, Jr, Lewis Samuel Raper, Calvin Lee Beam and Ivory Joe Wray; grandchildren, Valerie Camp, Travone Wray and Jeric Early; a step-son, M.G. Griffin and an uncle who was like a brother, Clarence Hambrick, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy, Janice "Dusty", Cynthia "Red" Wray, Larry Wray all of Shelby, Denise Pettis (Dennis) of Boiling Springs, NC, Vigor "Fella" Beam of Shelby, Priscilla Adams (Michael), Zinnie Brooks (Bernard), Jerry Beam (Ebony) and Kathy Beam all of Shelby; a step-son and step-daughter, James Louis Beam (Katherine) of Kannapolis, N.C. and Gwendolyn Thompson (Ed) of Shelby; 39 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Welsby of Charlotte, N.C., Roberta Parker of Greensboro, N.C. and Hester Beam of Shelby; a special friend, Edna Hamrick of Shelby and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church on Thursday, and at other times at the home.
Funeral Service: Thursday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 235 A.W. Black St. Waco, N.C. 28169.
Officiated By: Pastor Les Howard
Burial: Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.
