SHELBY - Mr. Walter "Walt" Miles Jernigan, 72, of 1645 Barbee Road, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at home.
He was born in Florence, S.C., on Oct. 20, 1937, to the late George Robert and Ethel House Jernigan. Walt was the former owner of Cleveland Paper and Waste and later retired as manager from Paper Stock Dealers. He served in the Marines as rank of Sergeant during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and AM Vets.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert "Bob" Jernigan and Howard Jernigan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Sheila Barber Jernigan of the home; son, Walter Jernigan Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; daughters, Jessica Hoopaugh and husband, Chris, and Tonya Wacaster and husband, David, of Shelby; brothers, Charles Jernigan and wife, Nancy, of Piedmont, S.C., and Lewis Jernigan and wife, Sally, of Seneca, S.C.; sisters, Betty Zimmerman and husband, Ed, of Spartanburg, S.C., and Ethel Galloway of Greenville, S.C.; and his loving grandchildren, Jackson "J.D." Jernigan, Tyler Hoopaugh, Kaylee Wacaster, Jake Frazier, Jenna Wacaster and Payton Hoopaugh.
Memorial Service: Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2 p.m., Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home
Officiated by: Mr. David Wacaster
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour before the service, at the funeral home and other times the family wil be at the home.
