CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Margaret Blanche Gettys Self, 97, of 804 Self Street, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Hospice at Wendover.
She was a wife to the late Ralph Theodore Self and a daughter of the late Peter Summey Gettys and Maggie Crowder Gettys. She was a retired telephone operator, and had worked at Howell and Nuway Mill, Beam Truck Museum and Kiser Grocery. She was a charter member of Cherryville Senior Citizens and bowled with them, volunteered at East Elementary School with students in first grade, member of the Women's Auxiliary of Club Carolina, honored with Cherryville Woman of the year in 1994 and volunteered for Cherryville Area Ministries for many years. In 1983, she was honored by the governor of North Caro-lina for her unselfish service to the community. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, with 17 years of perfect attendance, a member of Florene Styles Sunday school class, she taught children Sunday school classes for many years, held many offices in Sunday school class and was a member of Ida Wright Circle where she held offices, served on church committees and was a member of the Young at Heart.
She is survived by a daughter, Nell Self Griggs of Cherryville; grandchildren, Lynn Griggs Pennington and husband, Essel, of Greer, S.C., and Greg Griggs and wife, Melanie, of Henderson; and great-grandchildren, Zach and Alex Guest of Greer, S.C., and Hayes and Drew Griggs of Henderson.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Keith Griggs; brothers, Doc, Cole and Kuester Gettys; and sisters, Willa Mae Adams, Lillie Warren, Laura Ledbetter and Mary Dee Pendleton.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Saturday, April 10, 6 to 8 p.m., at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home of Nell Griggs, 108 Delview Drive, Cherryville.
Funeral: Sunday, April 11, 3 p.m., First United Methodist Church of Cherryville
