SANFORD-Mr. Donald Ray Thurkill, 81, of Zion Church Road, in the Deep River Community, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Shelby, on Aug. 17, 1931, to the late John W. Thurkill and Minnie White Thurkill. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Floyd, J.W., Glenn and Bob; and by his sisters, Pauline Fowler and Elaine Grigg.
He served in the United States Air Force and was retired from Weyerhaeuser. Don was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church, where he was involved in the "Tape Ministry". He was known as "Mr. Don, the chewing gum man" to the children of the church, as he would give them chewing gum each Sunday.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Doris Norwood Hight Thurkill; daughter, Karen Minter and husband Tilla of Sanford; son, R.V. Hight and wife Bunnie of Sanford; grandchildren, Christopher Hight and wife Jenni of Morrisville, Holly Hight, and Jordan Minter, both of Sanford; sisters-in-law, Hattie Thurkill, Ethel Thurkill and Winifred Thurkill; and many nephews and nieces.
By Mr. Thurkill's request, there will be no services.
