Betty Marsalis

Mrs. Gordon Ardis

Marsalis, Sr.

SHREVEPORT, LA - Betty Marsalis died at The Oaks on October 16, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Services for Mrs. Marsalis, 88, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 21, 2013, at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, with inurnment in the columbarium. Officiating will be The Very Reverend Alston B. Johnson, The Reverend Andrew Comeaux and Rev. Jonathan Beck, with a reception following in the Garden Room of the Ministry Center at St. Mark's.

Mrs. Marsalis was a member of one of DeSoto Parishes pioneer families, having been born in Mansfield on February 23, 1925, to the late Hallie Lee Durham and Dr. Clarence Sylvester Barlow. She graduated from Mansfield High School in 1941 before moving to Shreveport with her family. Betty attended Baylor University and Centenary College before graduating from the University of Texas in 1945 with a degree in psychology. Following her graduation, but before her marriage, she worked for the Welfare Department as a social worker.

As a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, she remained a very active alumna throughout her life and found great joy that her daughter and granddaughter, Kathryn, followed in her footsteps as legacies.

Betty served on the board at St. Paul's Day School. She was Publicity Chairman for the Southfield Book Fair, Cotillion costume coordinator for ROJ and Past Ball Chairman for the Demoiselle Club.

During their 61 year marriage, Betty and her husband, Gordon, enjoyed traveling the world. Their adventures took them to many places, but the Orient was perhaps their favorite. Whether on a trip or shopping estate sales with her daughter, Dru, Betty had an eye for fine things and a gift for ferreting them out. Her taste was exemplary, as was her style. In addition, Betty was a marvelous cook and loved entertaining friends and family in her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Clarence Roach Barlow and his wife, Becky Barlow Veteto; her daughter, Elizabeth Barlow Marsalis; son, Gordon Ardis Marsalis, Jr.; and her husband, Gordon Ardis Marsalis, Sr.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Dru Florsheim and husband, Mark; son, Allen Durham Marsalis and wife, Paris; four grandchildren, Kathryn Florsheim Stewart and husband, Scott, Mark Charles Florsheim, Jr., Christopher Allen Marsalis and Anna Elise Marsalis; and three great grandchildren, Alexa Danielle Stewart, Scott Austen Stewart and Aiden Keller Stewart.

She was a devout mother and grandmother and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of another great grandchild, a boy, in January.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Mark's Cathedral at 908 Rutherford, Shreveport, LA 71104 or Live Oak at 400 Blue Heron Way, Shreveport, LA, 71115.

Special thanks to Dr. P.V. Blanchard, Dr. Scott Wiggins and Jenny Kouba, CMA for their dedicated care throughout the years and to her devoted sitters-Cheryl Jackson, Patsy Grant, Elsie Lewis and Sissy Ford. The family would also like to express their thanks to Willis-Knighton Hospice, as well as the caregivers in The North Pavilion at The Oaks.
