J. B. Rich

J. B. Rich

JB Rich of Shreveport, LA left the pain and suffering of this world and entered the arms of his Savior on March 9, 2014. Born in Hilly, LA, on March 26, 1926, he was a near lifelong resident of Northern Louisiana, absent only for a few short years during and after World War II where he served in the US Army in the Philippines and then the Korean Occupation. Upon his return, JB married Barbara Allen Adkins (Rich), also from Northern Louisiana, who died just days after the birth of their first child, Charlotte Kay, in Ventura, CA. JB returned to Northern Louisiana, where most of his family lived and where he later married Betty Jean Gentry (Rich) of Hornbeck, LA, and they settled in Shreveport and raised their family of four children.

JB worked as a trolley driver for a number of years before becoming a postal carrier for the US Postal Service, where he spent almost 30 years. He and his family were members of Morningside Baptist Church in Shreveport which later moved to a new facility and became Kingston Road Baptist Church. Using all the talents God gave him, he served there faithfully over the years as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, deacon, helper in all manner of activities and go-to guy for church-wide fish fry events, providing a large portion of the fish and the expert frying technique. As a veteran of World War II and a depression era child, JB was a member of that great generation that fought hard, worked hard and deeply appreciated all that God gives us in this life. He loved most any activity that had him outdoors, he was member of the Red River Bowmen Archery Club and to say that he was an "avid" fisherman just doesn't describe it. His faith, love of family and dedication to everything he did was an inspiration to all who knew him.

JB is preceded in death by his five sisters (Lillian, Lorene, Sarah, Rosalyn and Virginia), his brother (Henry "Bud"), his first wife (Barbara) and two daughters, Laura Grace Rich (Addison) and Charlotte Kay Venable (Rich). He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Jean Rich (Gentry), daughter Geraldine Ann "Jeri" Rich (Liles) and son John Patrick "Pat" Rich, eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, all of whom he was so very proud and loved dearly. Pall bearers will be his six grandsons: Brian Addison, Jason Addison, Caleb Venable, Christopher Liles, Jacob Rich and Clayton Rich. Honorary pall bearers include family, close friends and brothers in Christ from Kingston Road Baptist Church: Gary Addison, Jarvis Bounds and Denny Morrison.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Ave, Shreveport, LA 71104. Funeral services will be held at Osborn Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, March 13 at 1:00 pm followed by interment at Forest Park Cemetery, 3700 St Vincent Ave, Shreveport, LA 71103, with Military Honors presented by Fort Polk Honor Guard.
