J.D. Nelson was born April 12, 1926 in Rayville, Louisiana, the oldest of four children. J.D., better known as "Daddy Slick," was a very private person, however, if he knew you, he was always making you laugh with his wonderful sayings which we called "Slickisms." He spoke his mind and lived life to the fullest. His love for fishing and gardening kept our family and friends stocked with everything from fish, vegetables to watermelon. J.D. retired from Southwestern Electric Power Company in 1987, after 34 years of service. He was active in the American Legion and was a Mason. He served in combat duty, in the United States Army during WWII in the Philippines.

J.D. was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings, and the "Love of his Life" wife, Alice Hall Nelson. Left to cherish his memories include, Daughter, Brenda Blackburn, Denver, CO; Son and Daughter-in-law, Glenn and Patti Nelson of Longview, TX; and Baby Daughter, Janice Fancher and husband, Lawson Fancher of Houston, TX; Grandson, Blake Nelson; Granddaughter, Terri Smith; great-Grandson's, Rhett and Tristan Blackburn; Great Granddaughter, Sydney Nelson; Many step-grandchildren and many who loved him that were not related. And a special friend that helped take incredible care of him during the past several years, Shirley Langley of Bossier City, LA.

Honoring J.D. as Pallbearers will be Brandon Ogden, Blake Nelson, Bobby Halton, Kenny Mitchell, Chester Kelly and Bobby Davis.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. The family would like to thank the VA Medical Center "Comfort Care" Unit and Dr. Gary Hensley.
