John Lamar Copeland
Funeral services for John Lamar Copeland will be held at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Shreveport. Officiating will be Dr. Jeffery R. Raines. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the church parlor. Interment will be at noon on Thursday, April 18, 2013 in East Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Texarkana, Arkansas.
John died on Monday, April 15, 2013. He was born September 22, 1932 in Dora, Alabama, the third child of Hazel and E. B. Copeland. He grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, attended Chamberlain Hunt Military Academy and graduated from Central High School and Millsaps College in Jackson. He served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers during the Korean Conflict
After moving to Shreveport in 1956, John was employed as a Petroleum Landman with Carter Oil Company, now Exxon. In1959 he became an Independent Petroleum Landman. In 1969 John moved to Minden, Louisiana where he was owner of John Copeland Chevrolet and a charter member of Webster Bank. In 1972 he was active in Independent oil and gas exploration thus forming Copeland Oil Company.
John was a member of the Ark-LA-Tex Association of Petroleum Landmen, serving as President from 1965-66; Director of the Independent Petroleum Association of America from 1985-87; President of the Petroleum Club of Shreveport in 1983; Director of the Louisiana Association of Independent Producers and Royalty Owners 1983-1986; member of the Volunteers of American Board of Advisors. In addition to being a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary, he was a member of the El Karubah Shrine, 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Royal Order of Jesters; and many civic organizations.
A longstanding member of First Baptist Church of Shreveport, John was a member of Triple Triangle Sunday School Class and served on the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee. Preceding Mr. Copeland in death were his mother, Hazel Moore Copeland; father, Ethridge Billard Copeland; sister, Carolyn Copeland Jordan; brother, Jere Ralston Copeland; and nephew John Clayton Jordan. Survivors are his wife of 56 years Carolyn Cox Copeland; daughter, Eleanor Kay Copeland deBerardinis and husband, David; son, Edward Anderson Copeland; grandchildren, Callye Ewing deBerardinis and John Samuel deBerardinis all of Shreveport; brother, Ethridge Billard Copeland, Jr., Knoxville, TN; nephews: Andrew Jackson Jordan, Jr. Gulfport, MS; Charles Dennis Jordan, Houston, TX; David Jere Copeland and niece Margaret Carolyn Copeland.
John was a loyal, caring and devoted husband, father, and friend. His handshake represented his honor and integrity.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bill Bledsoe, James C. Galbraith, Ted R. Jamison, William E. Jarratt, Ronnie Martin, Robert K. Mayo, Dr. James B. Weyman, B. Ross White, and C. Cody White.
